The Umbrella Academy solid reveals how the Sparrow Academy twist was virtually completely different
Umbrella Academy is known for taking big turns, and season two of the Netflix superhero show ended in its biggest shock to date. When The Umbrella Academy returned from 1963 to 2019, they were surprised to discover that Ben (Justin H. Min) lives in this alternate timeline and is the leader of a seemingly rival gang of superheroes called The Sparrow Academy. But when Min and co-stars Elliot Page (Vanya), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Daniel Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Tom Hopper (Luther) and Aidan Gallagher (Five) looked back on some of the most memorable Moments of the show for TV Guide’s ranking of the 100 best shows showed that the Umbrella Academy’s first encounter with the new Ben was almost completely different.
“In the first version of that scene,” Min recalled, “should Klaus be the one who sees me first, and he says, ‘Ben?’ It was nice to have that moment with Ben and Klaus, but they decided to change it because they didn’t want the audience to be confused, because they thought Klaus was the only one who could see Ben again, they changed him and so everyone just says ‘sh–‘ now which i find really funny and very much like our family to do. “
The introduction of the new Ben comes at a very emotional time for the Hargreeves family, shortly after the spirit of the original Ben disappeared into the airwaves. But Min made it clear that this new Ben is very different from the Hargreeves’ beloved dead brother, who kept Klaus from completely derailing for 17 years. A lot of work went into developing the new Ben, according to Min, and some of those changes are already reflected in his amazing pop-punk-inspired hair.
“We actually went through about 20 iterations of the hair situation. They wanted it to be as different from Ben’s hair as possible,” Min explained. “[The original] Ben’s hair is perfectly coiffed. He’s a ghost, so his hair rarely moves or shouldn’t move at all. They wanted something to be chaotic longer. You can’t really see clearly [in the scene]but there are some blue stripes. I like to call it my ode to My Chemical Romance. “

In addition to looking back on Ben’s reappearance, the cast repeated his heartbreaking goodbye earlier in the season, when Ben sacrificed himself to save Vanya, showing her that she was nowhere near as alone as she thought. “”He just cares about her like that. This is what she needs you know “Page said of the scene.” When he said, ‘You’re not the only one at the table anymore,’ that just knocked me down. “
The entire cast was moved by the sweetness of the scene between Ben and Vanya, telling how their characters had all bonded with Ben because he was the only Hargreeves sibling they’d all hit it off with. “We only see his relationship with Klaus, but we never really know what his relationship was like with the other siblings,” added Raver-Lampman. “This was a good window in. To be honest, it was a real flow of tears.”
Of course, we couldn’t talk about Umbrella Academy’s best moments without revisiting the legendary “I Think We’re Alone Now” dance scene from season one, filmed on Sheehan’s first day on the set. Check out the video above for all of the cast’s thoughts on these must-see moments at Umbrella Academy.
