The trailer for ‘The Fantastic World of Mickey Mouse’ guarantees enjoyable (if misguided) nostalgia

If you grew up watching Disney’s animated short films – either on VHS, on endless Disney Channel marathons, or how they originally appeared in theaters because you are incredibly old – Disney + has it for you. The streaming service just posted a trailer for The wonderful world of Mickey Mouse, a brand new collection of shorts with the title brand ambassador that will be released later this month.

The trailer promises a series of new seven-minute adventures with Mickey and his legendary friends, including Donald Duck, Goofy, Minnie Mouse, Pluto and Daisy Duck. (That said, Donald gets no lines in this trailer, and I’m not going to stand for that Donald Duck deletion.) If you are familiar with the classic Mickey Mouse shorts, the things presented here are very familiar, including Far concepts like Mickey and friends as rustlers in the Old West, and completely mundane things like the gang trying to buy a grill. That appeals to me as a kid who grew up wearing tons of old shorts on VHS because my two favorite Mickey Mouse classics are Lonely ghosts (Mickey, Donald and Goofy are ghostbusters in a haunted house) and moving day (Mickey and Donald are two roommates who go out of their way to move their belongings after the eviction, and Goofy is a delivery man who shows up and just decides to help them for no clear reason) The mixture of fantastic and everyday settings in the trailer definitely piqued my interest.

However, there is something that feels a little awkward about The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse. First, the animation style is flat and boring (which was an issue I also had with the otherwise enjoyable one DuckTales Restart). One of my favorite things about the classic shorts was the richness and detail of the cell animation, and everything here looks highly stylized and a little cheap. And second, the trailer is almost entirely focused on Mickey, and I’m not exactly sure how to say this, but Mickey is kind of boring. He was always the least interesting member of the trio, the happy straight man to Donald’s manic tantrums and Goofy’s catastrophic sucker. Seeing him as the cunning Bugs Bunny guy doesn’t feel entirely right. But hey, new Mickey Mouse shorts are new Mickey Mouse shorts, and this new range looks like a lot of fun. I’ll be checking out each and every one of these when they hit Disney + on November 18th.
