Ridley Scott’s Gucci casts Jeremy Irons to exchange Robert De Niro
Oscar winner Jeremy Irons has joined the already stacked cast of director Ridley Scott’s upcoming biographical drama Gucci. Irons will play Maurizio Gucci, the former head of the Gucci fashion house, a role that was originally intended Robert De Niro. De Niro’s involvement was obviously premature, and now Irons has pledged to join a stellar cast that includes Oscar-winning Lady Gaga, Oscar-nominee Adam Driver, Oscar-winning Winners Jared Leto and Al Pacino, and Jack Huston include and Reeve Carney, who are all in talks to appear.
Gucci comes courtesy of MGM and Gladiator Director Ridley Scott and is based on the book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Tale of Murder, Madness, Glamor and Greed by Sara Gay Forden. The adaptation is written by Roberto Bentivegna and produced by Scott with Scott Free Productions, Giannina Scott and Kevin Walsh.
In her first major film appearance since Bradley Cooper’s award-winning darling A Star is Born in 2018, Lady Gaga will appear in Gucci as Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of Maurizio Gucci (Irons), who was tried and convicted of orchestrating his assassination on the steps of his office in 1995. The trial caused a media sensation and revealed that after 12 years of marriage and two children, Gucci had decided to leave Reggiani for another woman.
During this time, Reggiani was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which her children blamed for her actions and murder plan. Reggiani was labeled a “black widow” by the press and was sentenced to 29 years, although her sentence was reduced after a successful appeal on the grounds that her brain tumor had influenced her behavior. Reggiani served 18 years in prison before being released in 2016.
The extremely dramatic real-life story has been a sought-after project since its conception. Netflix and other streaming platforms are battling to partner with director Ridley Scott to make the movie. Ultimately, because of the theatrical elements of the film, Scott chose to work with MGM. Giannina Scott will be producing the film with husband Ridley via the couple’s Scott Free banner and previously discussed how much it means to her and Scott to do Gucci. “This project has been a love job for Ridley and me for a long time,” she said of the film. “The story is so epic, the stakes so high, and the characters so richly drawn, that we were determined to bring them to screen. To say we are delighted to be working with Mike De Luca and his brilliant film group at MGM Understatement . We can’t wait for this to come to life next year. “
Gucci does not currently have a release date, although reports indicate that both MGM and Ridley Scott intend to release the film sometime next November. Given the ongoing global situation and recent delays in the entertainment industry, this date might be difficult to stick to. This comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
