Ready for the exhalation of adaptation within the works on ABC, with Lee Daniels as EP

Waiting for Exhale fans, the wait is over: A series adaptation of the 1995 film is in development at ABC, with Lee Daniels on board as executive producer, our sister site Deadline reports.

Billed as the sequel to the original film, the show, which has received a penalized script engagement from the Alphabet Network, “sees the next generation of our women through the lens of their daughters’ tangled friendships and complicated lives. “Attica Locke (when they see us) and Tembi Locke (Never Have I Ever) will co-write the project, with Emmy-winning Anthony Hemingway (The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story) directing.

Daniels, who created Empire and Spinoff Star for Fox, will serve as the EP. Terry McMillan, who authored the original book Waiting to Exhale, will also serve as consultant producer.

Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon awaited the exhale as a close group of friends who support one another through various entanglements in life and romance. The supporting cast were Dennis Haysbert, Gregory Hines, Michael Beach and Donald Faison.
