Matthew Morrison is the Grinch on NBC’s Dr. Seuss musical coming this December
Glee star Matthew Morrison turns green over the holidays this year as the Tony nominated performer will direct a new TV musical special based on the classic Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas is based. The special with the title Dr. Seuss’ Grinch Musical will air on December 9th on NBC. Morrison will appear as the eponymous Christmas theft, and the show will also co-star Tony winner Denis O’Hare (Big Little Lies) as Old Max, Booboo Stewart (Descendants 3) as young Max and Amelia Minto (The Lost Girls) as Cindy-Lou Who.

The original storybook version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas was first published in 1957. She follows a green grump known as the Grinch, a loner who despises everything about the Christmas holidays. Hoping to end the special day, the Grinch steals Christmas items from the town of Whoville on Christmas Eve, but after his heart grows three sizes bigger, the irritable creature changes his mind.
In 1966, How the Grinch Stole Christmas was turned into an animated television movie. Boris Karloff also plays the voice of the Grinch in addition to telling the story. New songs with lyrics were recorded for the animated special, including the oft-quoted melody “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch”. Over a decade later, the Grinch returned in the TV sequel Halloween Is Grinch Night, in which Hans Conried took the role.
Jim Carrey also took on his own role in a live-action film version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000. In addition to the great success at the box office, the film was well received by the audience and is regularly repeated by many fans every holiday season. More recently, a computer-animated reboot called The Grinch has been released in theaters, this time with Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the green caveman. This version achieved even greater success, grossing over $ 511 million worldwide to become the top-grossing vacation movie of all time.
